Green Square Growers
The Green Square Growers are local residents living in and around the Green Square area who are passionate about growing their own food and inspiring others in their neighbourhood who would like to do the same. As most members only have balconies or small courtyards, food growing can get very creative.
In early 2012 the Green Square Growers installed their first community garden raised bed at the Tote Library in Zetland. To be more accurate, it was a raised garden of the wicking bed variety with a worm tunnel at the centre.
With a reuse philosophy, the raised bed was made from recycled timber packing crates found at Reverse Garbage. Crushed concrete was recycled as a reservoir fill and tools needed were borrowed or belonged to individual members of the Green Square Growers. Even the garden worms were donated by the pooled resources of a number of household worm farms. That’s community spirit in action.
The group meet on the second Sunday of the month at 10.30am, outside the Tote Library (100 Joynton Ave, Zetland) . Check out their Facebook page for details.
