As Sydneysiders, we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to events, with TedxSydney in April, Vivid Ideas in May, Festival of Dangerous Ideas in November, and all the industry conferences in between. But there is a new kid on the block, and it’s one worthy of your attention.
Meet HotHouse a themed event series that draws together innovators, entrepreneurs and industry leaders. It includes keynote speeches about sustainability and innovation across a number of specialty areas. We asked program and event manager Andrew Tovey about the new talk series – and why they felt Sydney needed another talk series.
“To be a success we knew it had to be fun, creative, participatory and different. Rather than rush into it we spent most of last year talking with people and refining the ideas. Although HotHouse was conceived as a platform for rebranding sustainability, a lot of the ideas actually came out of a series of crowd-sourcing workshops. The final concept feels really fresh and well designed.”
The HotHouse series has shaken up the format of traditional panel events and conferences by injecting more collaboration and networking. Audience members will spend the first hour listening to the speakers. A workshop format follows, so the audience can share their ideas and ask questions. And finally there is a networking party to sip organic wine and craft beer, and mix with their fellow change makers. But the most innovative aspect is the follow up from the hothouse community after the event, supporting any change-making goals you made for yourself.
“HotHouse draws upon the best aspects of other successful events – the high production values and ‘ideas worth spreading’ approach of TEDx, the participation of U.LAB, and the pop-culture infusion of Jurassic Lounge,” Andrew explains.
“It reframes sustainability as the defining design challenge of our time – and the most exciting, as brings with it the opportunity to collectively sculpt a radically better future for all of us.”
“There are more and more innovators and leaders out there, across many diverse professions – HotHouse brings them together. Then it empowers you to join them as a change maker yourself through the FlashTank workshop. That’s the take-home message really – any one of us can be part of transforming society for a healthier, more liveable and sustainable future, but it does take more than tweaking your lifestyle. We have to start changing the system. HotHouse shows you how.”
HotHouse is a recipient of a City of Sydney environment grant. “Running a high-quality, entertaining event has a lot of costs attached. The grant has enabled us to produce graphics and video, promote the event and employ some talented creatives to really bring the evening to life, while keeping the ticket price accessible to everyone.”
The first event, held in March focused on SPACE. Some images of the event are located below.
